A Finnish man was sentenced imprisonment of three years and four months by the District Court of Eastern Uusimaa in the initial days of the previous month. This was a historic case for Finland as the prosecutors for the first time have indicted the darknet administrator of the website on the drug trafficking charges. The accused was found guilty and put behind bars for encouragement in the sale and illegitimate trading of drugs on a darknet site named “Sipulikanava” which the convicted has developed and kept active on the darknet.

Sipulikanava bears the English meaning of Onion Channel was operated fro, the year 2014 till 2017 on the Tor network. It was found out that the website’s activity was immediately ceased from October 2017 till November of the same year due to an investigation carried out by the local police leading to the search of the defendant’s residence. The accused was a 45 year old man who reportedly denied of being involved in the illicit drug trading in course of the preliminary investigation but later on admitted to have developed and managed the Sipulikanava website all throughout its lifetime. This information has been revealed by the East Uusimaa Prosecutor’s office. There was an eight day hearing in series where the defendant was convicted and sentenced to 40 months of imprisonment.

According to one of the District prosecutors, Anna-Riikka Ruuth, this incident has been claimed to be the first occasion in Finland that a darknet website admin has been convicted and sentenced for imprisonment accused for dealing with the trade of illicit drugs on the self created darknet market. There is no clear evidence though of his crime of illicit drug dealing and / or frauds apart from dealing with the online drug market on the dark web which is pretty regular in the world of dark web as there are numerous such markets operating on a daily basis.
